Confused about the different types of Human Hair Extensions available?

We're not suprised! There is so much jargon going around and so many different companies with so many different grades, we thought we'd make things simple for you and explain what the deal is.

Human hair comes in 4 main types. Remy, Brazillian Remy, non-Remy and Mixed Non-Remy. Here is what each of these means:

Remy

Remy hair is hair that has been collected from a willing donor. These donors are usually in India (where the hair is given as a part of their religion at the temples), China and Russia. All top brands will ethically source this hair from these places. The hair is then all aligned so that the cuticle lies in the same direction. This allows the hair to retain its soft natural texture, and can then be washed, styled and dyed as you would your own hair. The only processes it has gone through are to hygenically wash the hair ready for use and to colour it to provide all the shades usually available. This is the highest and best quality hair you can buy and means it will last so much longer and not tangle and matt up.

To buy Remy Hair extensions:

Brazillian Remy

Brazillian Remy hair, much like Remy, is collected from a willing donor. It is only available in 1 or 2 natural dark shades (as per its origin). It is all aligned so that the cuticles lie in the same direction and only hygenically washed ready for use. The only difference between this hair and Remy is that this hair has not been dyed in any way, so it is 100% natural Remy hair and will usually have a slight wave in it and the colour shades may vary slightly from pack to pack because of this.

Non-Remy

Non-Remy hair is Human Hair (normally European, Indian or Chinese hair) that has been processed in an acid bath to strip it of its cuticle. The hair is then given a silicone coating which gives the hair the appearance and texture of being shiney and silky smooth. It will feel alot like Remy hair, but the silicone can wear off with washing after time and the hair will be returned to its original cuticle stripped state. This type of hair is alot cheaper than Remy However, and is a very good alternative to Remy if you want to try extensions out, dread, braid or weave.

To buy Non-Remy Hair extensions:

Mixed Non-Remy

This is the lowest and cheapest type of human hair available. It is normally a mix of Non-Remy Human Hair and Synthetic Hair blended together. This means it can still be styled as you normally would, but will be more prone to tangeling and matting over time. Since this is mix with Synthetic Hair it also cannot be dyed effectively. The plus point to this hair is that it is a very cost effective, inexpensive way to wear hair extensions.

Kanekalon Jumbo Braid Textures and Sealability

Kanekalon Jumbo Braid is one of the most popular and versatile types of synthetic hair in the industry. Its durability, ability to be styled and set with heat, and the wide range of colours make it an exciting medium to work with for hair extensionists and avant garde stylists alike.

There is alot of talk surrounding it and its quality and texture across brands and colours, and here we will explain why this is and help you to better understand the fibre you are working with.

You may have noticed that the colour range for Kanekalon Jumbo Braid has increased recently. You may also find the texture and sealability of some of these colours will vary. Some may be harder to seal, some may be great to work with. Everyone has a different opinion of the same colours and this is why...

How the colour of the braid affects the workability...

Dying jumbo braid is an industrial process. To the dye the braid, the factories will use large machinery that is able to bulk dye enormous loads of kanekalon in one go. The dye process requires heat and various chemical dyes. Each dye will be slightly different due to how it is made up, this make up affects the dying process and the final texture of the hair. Some dyes will require a higher heat to take, and as such the heat resistance of the kanekalon will be raised. Because of this, you may find some of the colours a more shiney texture, some a more wirey, some more silky, some more crimped and so on. It is all the same fibre, just it has been affected by the colouring process in a different way.

In short, in order to have the vast range of colours available to you now, there will maybe be a compromise on the texture and sealability of some colours across all brands. As you work with them, you will find your favourites to work with (everyone has different opinions). We suggest investing in a handheld steam cleaner with a nozzle for making synthetic dreadlocks, as the temperature is high. A set of straightening irons are also good, but spray the dread with water and roll the straighteners round the dread to seal in quick uniform motions so you do not melt through the hair or flatten it.

All KANEKALON jumbo braid will seal with heat. FACT. How it seals will be dependant on the temperature you use, as long as the dread holds its shape when let go, you've cracked it!
